β±οΈ 3-minute read
The Autumn Budget has brought several announcements that could affect first-time buyers, homeowners and anyone thinking about moving. Here’s a breakdown of the key changes and what they could mean for you.
π Changes for First-Time Buyers
The Lifetime ISA is being replaced by a new First Time Buyer ISA. From today, the withdrawal charge drops to 20%, and buyers purchasing above the existing Β£450,000 property cap will no longer face a penalty.
π‘ A New Route onto the Property Ladder
The government’s new Your First Home scheme aims to help 70,000 first-time buyers. Eligible buyers could purchase a new-build home with a 2.5% deposit and a government equity loan of up to 20%. Full eligibility details are still to come.
π· Changes to Property Income Tax
Tax rates on savings and property income are set to rise by a further two percentage points from April 2027. Anyone receiving rental income should review the changes with their accountant once the detailed rates are confirmed.
β‘ Help with Energy Bills
Households in council tax bands A to D in England are set to receive a Β£100 energy payment from January 2027. The temporary VAT reduction on electricity will also be extended, while Ofgem will be asked to consider removing gas standing charges and transferring the costs to unit rates.
ποΈ More Affordable Homes
An additional Β£1.5 billion has been announced to support the delivery of 10,000 social and affordable homes across England.
π What About Stamp Duty?
Despite speculation ahead of the Budget, no stamp duty changes were included in the Chancellor’s statement or the Treasury’s published summary.
β What Should You Do Now?
The important thing is not to make rushed decisions based on headlines. Several announcements still need further guidance, and the full impact will depend on your individual circumstances.
