💛 Skipton takes the spotlight, but our villages keep the real smiles going 💛

⏱️ 4-minute read

Skipton has grabbed the headlines as the happiest place to live in Great Britain for 2025. It is just a few miles up the road from us, so it feels close to home. Being local, we also know that with any busy town comes a less polished side and the everyday issues most places face these days. That is not a criticism, just reality, and it is something anyone who lives nearby understands.

What matters just as much is what sits around Skipton. Our patch covers Cross Hills, Sutton in Craven, Glusburn, Cowling, Lothersdale, Cononley, Farnhill, Kildwick, Steeton, Eastburn and Silsden. These villages rarely make national lists, and that suits most of us just fine 🙂. Life feels calmer. Streets feel less rushed. Faces become familiar very quickly.

🏡 Each village has its own feel
No two of our villages are the same. Some are built around strong high streets, others around views and walking routes. Some are busier, some quieter, but all have a clear sense of place. People tend to settle, not just pass through.

🎓 Schooling that keeps families rooted
Good local schools are a big part of why families stay. Catchments matter here and there is a strong link between schools, parents and the wider community. It creates stability that towns often struggle to keep hold of.

🛍️ Everyday amenities close by
Shops, cafés, pubs, sports clubs and services are all on the doorstep. Many are independent and well supported. There is pride in using local businesses and seeing the same people week after week.

🚆 Easy links without the bustle
Rail and road links are strong, especially from places like Cross Hills, Steeton and Silsden. Skipton, Leeds and Bradford are all within reach, but home still feels removed from the noise once the day is done.

🌸 Countryside that actually gets used
Fields, canals, moors and footpaths are not just something to look at. They are part of daily life. Dog walks, weekend strolls and quiet cycles are woven into the routine, not saved for special occasions.

What really sets our villages apart is community spirit. People talk. People help out. Events still feel personal rather than staged. That sense of belonging is hard to measure in a national survey, but it matters.

It is no accident that every one of us at Leightons lives in these villages. We could choose elsewhere, but none of us want to. Work happens here. Family life happens here. Friendships grow here. We are not looking in from the outside. We are part of the same conversations, the same schools, the same shops and the same lanes.

Skipton may be the happiest town on paper. From where we stand, our villages feel like the happiest places to live day to day 😊.
