🌍 World Financial Planning Day – How to Take Control of Your Money
⏱️ 4-minute read
World Financial Planning Day is a reminder to step back and check your finances. A little planning today can make a big difference tomorrow. Here are some practical steps to get started.
💳 Review your spending
Go through your bank statements and spot the outgoings you could cut back on. Cancel subscriptions you don’t use and think carefully about what’s really essential.
💰 Start to save
Saving is harder with the rising cost of living, but even small amounts add up.
- Try the “1p challenge”: save 1p on day one, 2p on day two, 3p on day three, and so on. By the end of the year, you’ll have saved £668.
📈 Check your savings and investments
Not all savings accounts are equal. The best easy-access accounts pay almost ten times more than the worst. Make sure your money is working hard for you.
If you’re thinking about investments, remember that while they can offer higher returns, they also carry more risk. Decide if a mix of savings and investments is right for you.
🏡 Review your mortgage
If you already have a mortgage, ask yourself:
- Am I on the best rate?
- Could I switch to a better deal?
If you’re saving for your first home, check your progress towards a deposit and whether you could speed things up.
🕰️ Plan your pension
If you have a pension, look at what it’s expected to pay when you retire. Do you need to increase contributions?
If you don’t yet have a pension, consider starting one. It’s never too early to prepare for the future.
👩💼 Take expert advice
The aim of World Financial Planning Day is to highlight the value of professional advice. Research from the Financial Planning Standards Board shows that people who work with a financial planner often feel more confident, more resilient, and more satisfied with their financial lives.
As FPSB CEO Dante De Gori puts it:
“People who work with a financial planner report a higher quality of life, more financial confidence and resilience, and more financial satisfaction. World Financial Planning Day is the perfect occasion for all to discover why.”
💡 We hope you’ve found these tips useful. Why not share them with a friend who could benefit too?
