🌸 Jobs to Do in the Garden This Weekend

⏱️ 3-minute read

Here’s a list of tasks to do in your garden now to prepare for winter and set yourself up for a colourful, healthy spring.

🍂 Sweep, clear and tidy
When the gorgeous red, yellow and orange autumn leaves start hitting the ground, it’s time to get raking.

  • Collect up dead leaves (ideally put them in a compost bin if you have one).
  • Clear dead plant matter from gutters so rainwater flows freely away from your property.

🌿 Weed and brush
Weeds don’t stop growing just because summer’s over.

  • Remove weeds from plant beds, borders and paths before they have a chance to seed.
  • Use a wire brush to scrape moss or algae off stone or concrete paths — they can get slippery and become trip hazards in wet weather.

✂️ Prune
Not all plants need pruning at this time of year, but a few will thank you for it.

  • Cut back fruit bushes, tender plants like lavender and summer-flowering varieties.
  • Always cut just above a bud with sharp secateurs to avoid damaging the plant.
  • If you’re unsure, check your specific plant type before you start snipping.

🧹 Mulch
Spread organic matter, such as compost or mulch, across your beds.

  • This nutrient-rich layer helps protect plants from winter cold and feeds the soil for spring growth.

🌷 Get planting
Your efforts now will pay off next year.

  • Plant daffodil and hyacinth bulbs for a burst of colour in March.
  • October is also perfect for sowing hardy annuals like poppies, bishop’s weed and nigella.

🦔 Support wildlife
Give local wildlife a helping hand through the colder months.

  • Keep bird feeders topped up.
  • Make or buy a hedgehog feeding station.
  • Leave out meat-based cat or dog food (never milk) and fresh water to help hedgehogs build up reserves before hibernation.
