🏞️ Planning a Picnic? These Three Ideas Will Make It One to Remember
🌄 1. Pick an Unexpected Spot
Sure, the local park or beach works just fine, but trying something different can turn a simple picnic into something memorable.
Think about heading up the highest hill you can manage for lunch with a view, hiring a narrow boat on the canal, or even heading over to Haworth on the Worth Valley line for a rolling feast.
Want something more low-key? Try a sunrise breakfast picnic or a sunset evening spread, a peaceful way to take in the scenery and beat the crowds.
🍽️ 2. Give It a Theme
Rather than the usual sandwiches and sausage rolls, build your picnic around a food theme.
Try something like:
- A Mediterranean or Greek-style mezze
- A Turkish or Middle Eastern spread
- A bento box with Asian-inspired bites
- A Scandinavian midsummer-style platter
Don’t forget to choose drinks that will fit in with your theme, too.
If your picnic is for small children, how about holding a teddy bear’s picnic, a good old-fashioned doll’s tea party, or a princesses or superheroes-themed event?
🎉 3. Bring the Fun
To make your picnic extra special fun – and turn it into a long, lazy summer afternoon party – organise some entertainment for before or after you eat.
Choose some entertainment that fits the ages and interests of your guests. (And also, something that’s easy to carry and set up at your picnic site.)
A 1970s-style swing ball set is a great picnic favourite. Other entertainment ideas include a quiz, I-Spy, a scavenger hunt, hide-and-seek, limbo dancing, a tug of war, French pétanque or traditional quoits.
You could even try karaoke (there are several phone apps that mean you can take karaoke anywhere), although be considerate of those around you.
☀️ Enjoy the Simplicity
The best picnics are the ones that feel effortless but thoughtful. A good view, a few bites to eat, and some time to relax with others, sometimes that’s all that’s needed.

Feel free to share this with them, and here’s to making the most of National Picnic Month this July.
