🏡 Should You Improve Your Home Before Selling?
What buyers want may be changing
A new survey* shows buyers are now favouring homes that are ready to move into, rather than properties needing major work. Rising borrowing costs and expensive renovations mean the quality and finish of a home are now more important than the potential for extensions or conversions.
Paresh Raja, CEO of Market Financial Solutions, explains:
“Our ‘Homebuyer Wishlist’ survey tracks how the wants and needs of UK buyers change over time. This year’s standout finding is a growing desire for properties in good condition. With borrowing costs still above pre-2022 levels, buyers are seeking stability and predictability. Homes that are move-in ready are proving more attractive than those needing renovation.”
He adds:
“Any ‘doer-upper’ brings uncertainty — from the cost of materials and labour to the risk of delays. But of course, not every buyer is the same. Some enjoy a project, while others prefer a turnkey home.”
Ways to make your home move-in ready
🧽 Deep clean – It’s the quickest, cheapest way to make your home feel fresh.
🎨 Paint and decorate – A coat of neutral paint can transform a space and make it feel new.
🔧 Fix what’s broken – Repair sticky doors, cracked tiles or broken drawers. Small faults can put buyers off.
🚿 Focus on kitchens and bathrooms – Even a simple update, like new handles or taps, can lift these key rooms.
Make the decision that’s right for you
Will your home sell better if buyers can move straight in, put their furniture down, and relax? Possibly. But many buyers still prefer to personalise a property or take on a project.
