π Buyers Want Honest Homes, Not Artificial Perfection π
β±οΈ 3-minute read
π‘ There is a lot of advice online about how to βsell the dreamβ when preparing a home for viewings.
Fresh coffee brewing in the kitchen. Artificial vanilla sprays. Scented candles burning in every room.
Some homeowners even search for the βperfect smellβ to help secure a sale.
But the truth is, most buyers are not looking for perfection. They are looking for honesty.
π As members of the Ethical Agent Network, we believe buyers should walk into a home and get a genuine feel for how it has been lived in and cared for. Presentation absolutely matters, but there is a big difference between making a home feel fresh and trying to mask problems.
Most buyers can tell the difference surprisingly quickly.
π§Ό A clean, well-maintained home will always leave a better impression than one overloaded with artificial scents. In fact, strong smells can sometimes make buyers suspicious. If every room is heavily scented, people naturally start wondering what is being covered up.
That does not mean smell is unimportant.
It simply means the goal should be freshness, cleanliness, and comfort rather than creating something artificial.
πͺ Keeping kitchens and bathrooms clean, emptying bins, washing pet bedding, and keeping on top of general day-to-day maintenance all make a far bigger impact than expensive diffusers or overpowering sprays.
Buyers are usually trying to picture everyday life in a property. They want to imagine themselves cooking dinner, relaxing after work, or spending time with family. That becomes harder when a home feels staged beyond reality.
π· We also believe sellers should never feel pressured into spending unnecessary money preparing a property for market.
Some advice online makes it sound like every home needs hotel-style staging, expensive fragrances, and showroom presentation before it can attract interest. In reality, most buyers care far more about condition, layout, location, storage, and overall feel.
Homes do not need to smell artificial to sell well. They simply need to feel looked after.
That is why we always focus on practical, honest preparation advice. Sometimes small improvements help. Sometimes simple decluttering is enough. Sometimes the best advice is not to spend money at all.
Every property is different, and every sellerβs situation is different too.
π€ Good estate agency should help people feel confident about presenting their home properly without creating pressure or unrealistic expectations along the way.
β At the end of the day, trust matters more than tricks.
The buyers who are right for a home will usually respond best to properties that feel genuine, comfortable, and honestly presented from the moment they walk through the door.
