♻️ Save Money and Help the Planet, Support Second Hand September Now
Second Hand September is a simple idea with a big impact: buy less new, make the most of what already exists, and help reduce waste. Not only does it benefit the planet, it can also save you a lot of money.
✨ 1. Say no to new
Try to avoid buying new non-essentials this month. If a whole September feels too much, even a week makes a difference. Depop estimates that 18 to 35-year-olds could save a collective £2.8 billion a year just by choosing second hand fashion. And it doesn’t have to stop at clothes – furniture, tech, toys, bikes, and baby gear all count too.
🧥 2. Save a second hand item
Take a look in your cupboards, attic, or wardrobe and see what you can bring back into use. Forgotten clothes, shoes, or household items can be dusted off, cleaned up, and given a second life.
💷 3. Sell second hand
If you no longer need something, sell it on. You’ll earn a little extra while giving others a chance to join in. Depop says sellers could make between £350 and £5,000 a year. Anything you don’t want to sell can be donated to a charity shop or offered on freecycle.
🔄 4. Swap second hand
Organise a swap with friends, family, or colleagues. Trade things you no longer use for something you will. For a bigger impact, turn it into a community event at a school, church, or local hall.
🎨 5. Upcycle
Transform old items into something new. A glass bottle can become a lamp, or worn-out clothes can be stitched into colourful cushions. Upcycling is creative, fun, and gives you something unique for your home.
📱 6. Share on socials
Posting your Second Hand September efforts online costs nothing but can inspire others to join in. The more people take part, the bigger the impact we can make together.
If you know someone who would enjoy these ideas, share this article with them and spread the word.
