A recipe for success: Smarten up your kitchen

It’s not just the likes of Gordon Ramsay, Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver who love spending time in the kitchen.

During the 16 years I’ve been an estate agent I’ve seen plenty of prospective buyers fall head over heels with a home after laying eyes on a well-designed, stylish kitchen. Quality high-gloss units, Belfast sinks, integrated appliances, solid wood work-surfaces, under-floor heating, fully bespoke Secret Drawer kitchens, beer and wine fridges! If a kitchen has the wow factor buyers often develop the ‘we want it now factor’.

Think about it though for a minute. We spend a lot of time in our kitchens, especially if it is spacious enough to include a breakfast /dining area. I’ve spoken to plenty of sellers who’ve said that they rarely sit in their living rooms any more, it’s all about the kitchen and the living/dining/kitchens you find in the new-build properties are very popular.

The kitchen is often where we start the day, where families socialise and of course it’s pretty much where everyone hangs out when you’re having a party!

We’re often asked by vendors what’s the most important room from a buyer’s perspective. In my experience I’d have to say it usually is the kitchen.

If you are going to spend money getting your home ready to market think carefully about how your kitchen looks, feels and if it needs upgrading. I’d be more than happy to have a chat with you to give you my pointers on how to make the heart of your house be as appealing as possible.

The images shown on this blog are the kitchens from properties we have sold, with the exception of the first one which is the superb dining kitchen of the lovely three bedroom terrace that we are putting up for sale very shortly in Sutton! The people who bought these properties certainly fell in fell in love with the kitchen and it’s easy to see why.
